Thanks to wireless routers, setting up a home or small business network is easier than ever. No running cables, no drilling through walls, just plug in, configure, and go. However, it’s also easier than ever to hack into someone’s network, thanks to wireless routers.

If, when setting up your router, you didn’t change the administrator name and password, or if you’re still broadcasting your SSID, (or if you don’t understand what all this means) then it’s possible someone else might leach onto your network and leverage your broadband connection for their own nefarious means.

So, let’s take a minute and look at various ways you can “lock down” your wireless internet connection and assure that the only people able to access it are the ones you specifically allow.

First of all, go to your router’s configuration screen. This is done through an internet browser. Go ahead and open your favorite internet browser. In the address bar, type the home address for your router. Most routers use either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 for their default address. Your router’s instruction manual will tell you that address. When you enter the correct address, you’ll see a user name/password screen. Enter the correct values here and you’ll be at the configuration screen. The following steps will not be specific to your router, as each manufacturer will have different layouts for their controls. Instead, this guide will tell you general steps – refer to your instruction manual for specifics.

Change the administrator name and password. There will be a tab or section labeled “Administrator”, or something similar. In that section you will be able to change the password and, possibly, the administrator name. (Some routers don’t let you specify a name, just a password.) For the name, do not use Administrator, Admin or your name. Instead, use something more unique. Is your house blue? Then how about “bluehouse”? Or maybe “homsweethom”? You get the idea – something hard for the bad guys to guess. For the password, again use something hard to guess. Never use “1234″ or “pass”. Use a secure password. Something that combines upper and lower case letters, numbers and non-alpha-numeric characters. Something like “@miCKy573mOusE”. Don’t broadcast the network name. In the Wireless section or tab, there will be an option to broadcast the network name, or SSID. This means your router sends out the network name to make it easier to detect and connect to it. Well, if the bad guys can’t see your network, it’ll be harder to leach onto it. Make sure the option to broadcast the name is turned off. Use a security type. In the Wireless Security section, you have the option to set the security type. Never select None or Disabled. This would leave your wireless signal wide open for anyone to use. If you have WPA as an option, use that, or at the very least, select WEP security. Use a DNS filter. There will be a section where you can exclude all computers except those with certain DNS values. The DNS value is a string of characters generated by the computer’s network adapter. This string is unique to every computer. So by entering just your family’s DNS strings, you’ll be allowing those computers access, but preventing access from everyone else. To find a computer’s DNS string, click on Start, then type CMD and press Enter. (For XP click Start, then Run, and then type CMD and press Enter.) In the black command window, type “ipconfig -all” (without the quotes) and press Enter. In the section that describes your wireless adapter, you’ll see a line showing the physical address. That’s the DNS string. Do not allow wireless configuration of the router. There may be a checkbox to allow wireless configuration of the router. When this option is turned off, only a computer that is connected to the router via a LAN cable will be able to make changes to the configuration. This will prevent anyone from making changes unless they’re physically plugged into your network.

If you implement all of these steps, you can rest assured that only you and the people you specifically authorize will access your wireless connection. There will be no way the bad guys will be able to get into it.

Two more things: If you’ve changed the network name, encryption type, or pass phrase, you’ll probably have to re-enter the security key before reconnecting any computers to the wireless network. Which brings us to the second thing…

After setting all of the values above take a moment to write them in a Notepad document and then print it out and put it someplace safe. That way if you need to connect another computer to the wireless network, you have values easily accessible. Here’s an example of the values to save:

How ultra low power wireless networks and energy harvesting are going to make our planet a better place to live.

Even our remote controls that we use to turn on our TVs and home entertainment systems are essentially sense- and control elements. In industrial and warehouse locations, wireless sensors are mounted in locations that cannot be easily wired or are inaccessible. Out in the fields, farms are using wireless sensors to monitor soil humidity and conditions. In many offices, thousands of battery powered security sensors are attached to doors and windows for security and access purposes.

The common denominator for many of these common applications are batteries. Batteries – that need to be changed or recharged when they run out of power. Low Power Wireless Networks

The second technology development is the emergence of a new generation of ultra low power wireless networks that can be powered either by the low currents generated by energy harvesting or, because of their low power draw, can function for years on a single small cell battery. Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standard (comparable to Wi-Fi but dedicated for sense- and control networks because of requiring much lower power), these ultra low power networks are targeted to applications that require reliable connections but do not need a lot of bandwidth.

One simple application is using human finger power generated by simply flicking a switch or turning a dial to wirelessly activate a light across the room. Once installed, I checked the options. We should help them learn how to create a scheduled full scan, but the instructions are easy to follow. Glad I bought a 3-user computer’s hard drive crashed and another we could download Kaspersky on it after removing the Norton 30 day trial. My computer is XP and the other is Vista. Both run much faster than the Kaspersky always did with Norton. Again, I highly recommend this product Kaspersky.

Happy With It

I bought this product a month ago. Found it easy to install (I consider myself competent but not expert on computers) and have noticed none of the slowdown or interruptions mentioned in earlier posts on this site. Product has grabbed several trojans/worms and runs a complete scan overnight. Replaced the sample MacAfee (good riddance) and is more user friendly and less intrusive than the BitDefender I have on my laptop and older desktop. This is on a HP desktop with Intel 280G DuoCore, 4G RAM and a Terrabyte HD running W7.

Up to speed!

I have a 7 year old Dell laptop, upgraded to Windows XP home edition (SP3) a few years back. My last security software was McAfee, which slowed the speed to really slow dial-up, like pre-56K! I have friends who raved about Kaspersky but they had newer computers with faster processors and more memory; I was wary that my system would still be bogged down. I am pleased to report that was not the case. Getting McAfee uninstalled and Kaspersky installed and running took ~30-45 minutes and it is now a pleasure to use my computer again! I can’t believe how much faster it is! I couldn’t be happier!

Outstanding Support

I was hit with antispyware soft virus which completly wrecked my PC. Rather than spend $ $ $ $ to clean & wipe my disk, I looked at anti-virus sofware. The problem with most is they are generally most effective loaded on a clean machine. With mine infected, I took a chance with kaspersky. With only safe-mode capability, I contacted Kaspersky support ( could not load & register software) and via email they sent me software to load and send back the results for analysis. Following my submittal of the captured data, I got a second email the next day with another custom script based on their analysis of my PC. I ran it, and then rebooted in normal mode with the virus gone!! I was now able to load & run Kaspersky which detected & quarantined a trojan virus which I suspect was a piece of antispyware soft waiting to relaunch. 
I could not be more pleased with this prodcut and the outstanding customer support. I had falsely believed that Widnows Defender was adequate along with Windows automatic updates… 
I have learned my lession-everyone needs a good anti-virus program on their PC and Kaspersky software & support is my choice

Slow performance only when you run it for the first time

Have been using KIS for 3 years now, and never had any problems with. Easy to use and always find answers in helpfile or forums if I have issues or questions. 

Also heard a lot of complains about KIS 2010 slowing down performance, but I found it only happens on the initial stage. Basically, when you run any program for the first time, it will not run for up to 30 seconds due to KIS scanning it. However, it does not happen again when you run the program next time. So after you first install KIS you will experience these slowdown issues, but after KIS learns about all your frequently used programs, your performance will back to normal and you will only experience slowdown if you want to execute some new program for the first time. I was really frustrated with this performance issue when I just upgraded from KIS 2009, but now everything is as fast as it used to be.

I’ve used several different security applications over the years including Norton, Trend Micro, Zone Alarm, AVG, Avast, and others – Kaspersky is the best for me. It is simple right out of the box or can be tweaked to the smallest detail. Kaspersky is always scanning but uses very little resources especially compared to the resource hogs like Norton – on my Widows 7 64bit box it uses about 12,000K – 13,000K of memory. When scanning, it is lightening fast with as many scan options as you wish to chose. I’m especially keen on the Application Control and the Safe Run features. I’ve only used it for about 3 months now but thus far it is a real winner. The only drawback for me is understanding some of the detailed logs.

AT&T’s wireless network in Vermont is monitored twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week at AT&T’s state-of-the-art Global Network Operations Center. This facility manages all of AT&T’s voice and data traffic and provides visibility into network performance in Vermont, allowing the company to better maintain its infrastructure, analyze network performance, and ensure network capacity to meet customer demand. AT&T also has a dedicated network team in place locally, who can be rapidly dispatched to individual cell sites or switching centers, including a newly built AT&T network facility in White River Junction, should the need arise.

Since AT&T closed its acquisition of Unicel’s Vermont assets in December 2008, it has added ten new cell sites, bringing new or expanded coverage to customers in Rochester, Wilmington, Lincoln, Williston, Cuttingsville, Essex Junction, Springfield, Westfield, Fairfield and Enosburg Falls. Three additional cell sites are planned for later this year in Plainfield, Poultney and Eden.

“The integration and expansion of AT&T’s wireless network is another important step towards our goal of having the assets that will bring mobility and broadband connectivity to every corner of Vermont,” said Governor Jim Douglas. “This is an important economic development tool. AT&T is moving forward with plans to launch its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network in Vermont later this year, bringing faster wireless speeds to communities including Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland, St. Albans, Hartford, Ludlow, Brownsville, Windsor, Vernon, White River Junction, West Wardsboro, Jamaica, Brattleboro, West Townshend, West Dover, Jeffersonville, Barre, Waitsfield, Essex Junction, South Burlington, Colchester, Williston, Winooski, Warren, Stowe, Killington, Northfield, Montgomery Center, Bennington, Middlebury and Pownal.

AT&T’s 3G wireless network is available in nearly 350 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. and is ranked as the nation’s fastest according to data compiled by leading independent research firms.

In response to growing demand for its highly desirable wireless products and services in Vermont, AT&T has added more than 75 new jobs, predominantly sales and customer support positions, across the state. In addition, AT&T is bringing “the store to your door” with a mobile retail store in a retro-fitted RV traveling throughout areas where AT&T has limited brick-and-mortar locations. The RV, a 31-foot AT&T-branded vehicle equipped with the latest wireless devices, has already made several stops this summer in Stowe, Ferrisburgh, Randolph and Thetford. AT&T plans to announce additional RV retail tour locations in the coming weeks.
